Understanding This Calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator computes the future value of a present sum (or series of payments) at a given rate and time, the foundational time-value-of-money calculation behind nearly every financial decision.
How to use the results
- 1.Enter your present value (money today), expected rate, and number of periods.
- 2.For recurring payments, switch to the annuity mode and enter the payment amount.
- 3.The result is what your money is worth at the end of the period at that rate.
Worked example
$25,000 invested at 6% for 15 years has a future value of about $59,900. That's the power of time value — $25,000 today is worth far more than $25,000 in 15 years.
Important assumptions & limitations
- •The rate is per period; make sure it matches your period length (annual rate with annual periods).
- •Assumes a single constant rate throughout — real rates vary.
- •For annuity mode, payments are assumed at period-end (ordinary annuity).
