Understanding This Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator determines your FIRE number — the portfolio size needed for financial independence — based on your annual expenses and a chosen withdrawal rate, then shows how long it takes to reach it at your savings rate.

How to use the results

  1. 1.Enter your annual expenses and target withdrawal rate (4% is the standard, 3% is more conservative).
  2. 2.Add your current savings and monthly contribution plus expected return.
  3. 3.The result gives your FIRE number and the years to reach it.

Worked example

With $40,000/year expenses and a 4% withdrawal rate, your FIRE number is $1,000,000. Saving $2,000/month at 7% from a $100,000 start reaches it in roughly 18 years.

Important assumptions & limitations

  • The 4% rule assumes a 30-year retirement and a 60/40 stock/bond mix; longer retirements may need a lower rate.
  • Does not account for taxes on withdrawals from tax-advantaged accounts.
  • Ignores Social Security, which can lower your FIRE number by covering part of your expenses.
