Understanding This Calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates how much monthly income your retirement savings can generate, given your nest egg, withdrawal rate, and expected return, optionally combined with Social Security.
How to use the results
- 1.Enter your total retirement savings and the withdrawal rate you plan to use.
- 2.Add expected monthly Social Security and any pension income.
- 3.The result shows estimated monthly and annual retirement income.
Worked example
A $1.2M portfolio at a 4% withdrawal rate provides $48,000/year ($4,000/month). Combined with $2,000/month Social Security, total retirement income is $6,000/month.
Important assumptions & limitations
- •The withdrawal rate assumes a constant return; real returns vary, creating sequence-of-returns risk.
- •Does not model required minimum distributions (RMDs) starting at age 73.
- •Social Security estimates are user-provided; check your mySSA account for an accurate figure.
