Understanding This Calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates whether your current savings rate and balance will hit your retirement income target, factoring in your current age, retirement age, and expected returns.
How to use the results
- 1.Enter your current savings, monthly contribution, expected return, current age, and target retirement age.
- 2.The result projects your nest egg at retirement; compare it to your target (often 25x your annual expenses).
- 3.Adjust the contribution or retirement age to see what's needed to close any gap.
Worked example
A 35-year-old with $50,000 saved, adding $800/month at 7% until age 67, reaches roughly $1.35 million — close to the common $1.25M target for $50,000/year of retirement spending.
Important assumptions & limitations
- •Returns are assumed constant; real portfolios experience sequence-of-returns risk near retirement.
- •Does not include Social Security, pensions, or other income sources.
- •Pre-tax; does not model RMDs or tax-deferred withdrawal constraints.
